With LinkedIn always updating and improving its offerings (or at least trying to), the terminology of publishing articles has changed greatly from 2017. If you’re not in the loop or you’re a LinkedIn newbie, you may be unaware of the new or past LinkedIn vocabulary.
An old ‘help’ article from LinkedIn uses the terminology ‘long-form post’ and fast-forward to 2019, they are using the word ‘article’ in its place. In 2017 your original content was displayed on the Posts section of your LinkedIn profile, which today is called the Articles section.
When publishing an article it is shared with your connections and followers when you promote it and in 2017 it came through in notifications. (They may have realised how it was becoming spam with the amount of notifications from articles being published).
Previously, articles, or long-form publishing at the time, were not available in all geographical regions, yet they now are. Companies still can’t publish from their Company Page which is now referred to as LinkedIn Page or just Page but there is now LinkedIn Documents which articles can be published through.
What has remained is that a member who isn’t in your network can choose to follow your article, which will allow your next article to reach their feed. But, these days you virtually have to send it one by one to get any eyeballs on your articles.
Both in 2017 and 2019 access to publishing has been available to both free and premium accounts but it’s important to note having a premium account doesn’t guarantee publishing access.
